Waterlight Graffiti is a project with the aim to create a material made of thousands of LEDs that light up when touched by water. When the water touches the frame of an LED, it creates an electrical bridge that transfers the power required to light up the LED embedded under the surface. The wetter it is, the brighter it gets.

Based on an idea as simple as bright, Waterlight Graffiti’s purpose is to be a new kind of reactive material for drawing or writing ephemeral messages made of light. This project allows anyone to graffiti the wall of LEDs using a basic environment-friendly atomizer. The use of water, which has neither shape nor colour, to draw light, is a magical experience, regardless of the age of the audience or their artistic sensibilities. This opportunity finally becomes a new way of interaction with urban architecture. By combining a natural element with technology, Waterlight Graffiti’s users can even play with the weather or the rate of evaporation or speed for example. Waterlight Graffiti also has a surprising role during rainy days, turning them into fireworks of damp LEDs.

Antonin Fourneau

Antonin Fourneau’s creations focus on the interactions between the history of technologies, games, light, sound and cinema. Antonin’s work takes different forms: installations, attractions, objects and events.  In 2012, after a trip to China, Antonin developed and patented a project for a moisture-sensitive material that lights up when in contact with water, called Waterlight Graffiti. This technically smart creation provokes such amazement that it is regularly exhibited internationally. Fascinated by the public’s reaction, Antonin continues to be interested in smart materials today. However, he is also considering working on non-human forms of interaction. In addition, Antonin teaches Media Design at ENJMIN game School.
