With modern technology, myth becomes experience: the installation by Nachtlicht and Fusion.Robot invites visitors to call upon the forest god and awaken the legendary spirits of Yakushima’s ancient forest.

Rumors tell of forest spirits haunting the lakeshore at night, though no one has ever seen them. Nachtlicht and Fusion.Robot have now developed a technology that allows visitors to contact the forest god and summon the spirits. All that’s needed are mystical trees nearby and a mobile phone. The installation is inspired by the primeval forest on the Japanese island of Yakushima, which also inspired Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke.

Nachtlicht & Fusion.Robot

Roger Winzeler and Balz Caflisch are game designers who explore the intersection between video games and light art in their collaborative projects. Their goal is to actively involve the audience in the installation, turning them into participants and reducing the distance between artists and viewers. They are supported by Xaver Wenzinger and Beat Kunz.
